Lighting and Healing Shadowed Wounds

As we encounter painful or fearful experiences in life, we tend to retract and close ourselves off from them, avoiding or shielding ourselves from as much of the hurt or anxiety as possible. It is natural to avoid or protect ourselves from unpleasantness, but continuing to do so after we’ve already been injured does us a great disservice. Doing so is like covering over a poisoned wound with a bandaid and expecting it to heal without using medicine. Those wounds we ignore or suppress and forget about stay lodged in the subconscious part of our memory-body or psyche, where they continue to fester, quietly influencing our beliefs, moods, and behavior, blocking or disrupting normal functioning, and causing parts of our minds to be stunted, underdeveloped, or dis-integrated.

These suppressed elements of our psyche become a part of our “shadow-self” (personal sub-/un-conscious) and can greatly encourage addiction, physical ailments, mental illness, and habitual or unconscious behavior that is harmful or that at least distracts us from achieving our full potential. We can only heal those tender wounds when we allow them to come to the surface in a safe environment, to be felt and honored in the light of conscious awareness, without judgement, but rather with a gentle dignity, courage, kindness, compassion and a genuine effort to understand. Often we will need the assistance of a compassionate healer or at least the support of an empathetic listener; we are courageous to ask for that help and should not hesitate to seek it out.

If our adolescent human species is to survive at all and proceed on with a conscious evolution, we must be willing to bravely face our individual and collective “shadows”, to shine the light of awareness and compassionate understanding on them, and succeed together in actively healing the wounds that our greed, anger, delusions, pride, narrow-mindedness, and ignor-ance have caused one another. Listening with a sincere aspiration to understand those whom have not felt heard and have been neglected by society is just the first step, but one we’ve largely yet to take. Our collective karma has been one of passing on pain and suffering from generation to generation and person to person, allowing it to grow larger and larger, to systemically dangerous levels, because the majority of us have thus far refused to face our own fear and woundedness and take personal and collective responsibility for our own minds and actions, so as to break the cycle or causal chain of passing on the pain and suffering and instead transmute it into fertilizer for our growth and maturation.

Understanding the Desire for Power & Control

When people intentionally act to instill fear in or have control over others, it rewards them with a feeling of power. But what is the nature of this reward? If we investigate this question sufficiently, we can see that such "evil" behavior is not rooted in "malice" but ultimately stems from suffering and ignorance.

The ego's purpose is to provide safety and prosperity for itself (for the organism), and therefore it desires, among other things, predictability (certainty if possible). When the ego-construct feels powerful and in control over a situation or person, it feels a sense of security, rather than anxiety (fear of the unknown) in the face of an unpredictable situation or person. For the majority of people, it is fear (the most pernicious form of suffering) that drives such controlling behavior. They consciously or unconsciously seek to control in order to reduce their anxiety. Even when there is anger involved in the controlling behavior, fear is at its root.

However, for some people, ego can become warped over time such that the exercise of power, of control, is based on pleasure instead of fear. The more often, and more strongly, an ego feels rewarded (neurochemically) through its alleviation of anxiety through controlling behavior, the more the behavior becomes motivated by the reward itself. Seeking a neurochemical pleasure response becomes the underlying (if unconscious) motivation for power and control. This is also the case for abused people who become abusers and for the very small percentage of people who are genuine psychopaths/sociopaths.

For the majority of people, controlling behavior is based on fear, whereas, for the minority it is based on a desire for pleasure. Regardless, fear and desire are causes of suffering for the perpetrator, not just for their victims. Furthermore, it is only through ignorance that people engage in such behavior at all. For psychopaths/sociopaths, the ignorance is in the form of lacking empathy due to neurological deficits they have no personal capacity to overcome. For all others, the ignorance is a lack of conscious awareness of why they are behaving the way they are, and a lack of understanding that their desire for certainty or pleasure actually cause themselves suffering and that such desire can be safely given up to attain a greater peace and joy.

If we can have compassion for such people (while of course preventing them from causing additional harm), we can motivate them to change by helping them to see into the underlying nature of their behavior and help them realize the greater reward on the other side of their veil.

Helping Others from a Place of Strength

If you wish to help a person whom is suffering, your offering to them must come from a rooted position of balance — from the very fulcrum of your being. Suffering is an expression of imbalance, in one form or another. You offer them help in ways that stabilize and assist them in recovering their balance. If your mind is not balanced, grounded, and stable, when you interact with the imbalanced person, your effort to balance them will cause you to become more imbalanced yourself. When you become sufficiently imbalanced you are no longer able to help the other person at all (you may even cause them harm) and now you must work to recover your own balance.

Your mind must be balanced to truly help, but so too must the offering itself arise from the centered fulcrum of your being — the bottomless, boundless center within ourselves from which genuine wisdom and compassion naturally arise. If your offering arises from the ego — having expectations attached to the outcome of or response to your offering — your offering becomes a mental lever that can be pushed or pulled by circumstances, causing you to lose your equanimity and balance. From a place of selfless loving Presence, of the Universe’s true Fulcrum, you are offering from the Place of true strength and grace.

Sexual Repression is the Problem, Not the Solution

“To deny our own impulses is to deny the very thing that makes us human.” – The Matrix

If you want to understand why there is so much negative/harmful sexual expression in society you need to understand sexuality as being a fundamental and natural expression of our creative life-force (energy), and that mode of creative expression has been culturally repressed, suppressed, and shamed to everyone’s detriment for hundreds of years.  This sexual energy within people is like a gently simmering pot of water – if you put a heavy lid on it, pressure will steadily build up to the point that the pressure can no longer be contained and there is a sudden, uncontrolled outburst of steam.  This can take the form of sexual harassment, sexual exploitation of women, excessive use of pornography, child sexual abuse, some instances of rape, etc.  Only when a person’s needs for sexual expression are not allowed a healthy social outlet do they take on a “dark” (self-serving), frustrated, or desperate expression.  That which you suppress becomes your “shadow” and it is the shadow-self that causes harm to self and others.

Masturbation is not a long-term solution (especially for men, who are much more root/sacral chakra centered in their self-expression than women, who are more heart-centered) because sexuality is ultimately a universal impulse of creation expressed through spiritual union (holistic reunion).  Masturbation may release some of that pent up sacral energy for a time, but that is a very limited form of sexual expression that does not provide the emotional, psychological, and spiritual bonding rewards that are deeply subconscious yet powerful needs we all have as individually-incomplete energy beings.

Although people are responsible for their actions to the extent they actually have self-awareness and self-control to make a choice outside of habit or impulse, society is overwhelmingly to blame for the huge suppression of sexual expression that has placed people in a sexual “pressure cooker”, through unnatural conservative values, legal prohibitions, and a lack of empowering education regarding the spiritual meaning and non-mechanical aspects and dynamics of sexuality.  Society is also worthy of blame to the extent it has failed to empower people with the knowledge, wisdom, and techniques required for genuine self-awareness and self-discipline.  Furthermore, corporations of various kinds have largely hijacked our views about sexuality, corrupting them and constantly triggering lust to favor their profit motives.

While we are seeing love-based “sex positive” values begin to get a foothold in our collective culture, this is not enough.  Cultural and legal hindrances to sexual expression must be withdrawn, corporations must be held to task for corrupting sexual values, people need to be better educated about the greater nature and meaning surrounding sexual behavior, and safe social outlets for such expression should be encouraged.  Such actions “just make sense” when you simply acknowledge and appreciate human nature for what it is and understand social dynamics from a systems theory perspective.  In this area, as in most others in which we have collective problems, what is needed most is a controlled decompression of tensions, so that peace, harmony, and love can be restored to prominence.

Lightbearer's Creed

Darkness may gather but I shall not fear, for my purpose is clear. My destiny is to be a beacon of Light in a world of shadows, recognizing that my flame, having grown into a spiritual fire, does not fear turbulent winds, for winds now only fan the flames.

From this day forth, I am dead to my past and alive within my future, always present in the moment, perceiving, loving, serving, protecting, and honoring Life.  I will do everything possible to minimize the harm I cause other Life, deliberate in my efforts to serve the greater good.  It is not my place to judge the nature of other beings, only to understand and respond righteously, with virtue and compassion — never with arrogance or malice.

I am an emissary of Loving-Light: a watchful guardian and guide,
a benevolent peacemaker and healer, a humble arbiter of wisdom and harmony.  I offer myself in loving service to the welfare of all beings, recognizing it as my own.  I enjoin myself to be a lightbearer, striving always to exhibit the qualities of Wisdom, Love, Generosity, Diligence, Fortitude, Integrity, Equanimity, Humility, Self-Restraint, Selfless-Service, Skillfulness, Prudence, and Heroic Courage.

I vow to promote and preserve a just and enlightened community, with grace and honor — remembering that to do so requires I remain mentally, ethically, and physically fit to serve effectively, always prepared and willing to live up to the physical and moral demands of any situation.  I will always be mindful of the needs of my community and strive to fulfill them.

Today my vigil begins and it shall only end with my death.

Morality, Society, and the Return to Simplicity

Let us consider the problem of societal complexity through the lens of technology for a moment. Technology is indifferent to the ideas of good and evil. A tool of technology does not decide the manner in which it is used; only the wielder of the tool can decide whether it is used for good or evil purposes. However, one of the problems with the idea of "good and evil" is that it requires a subjective moral judgement as to what is "good" and what is "evil." When it comes to any subjective determination, different cultures, subcultures, and individuals will never fully agree on specific issues or criteria. This the place in which complexity arises in social life. Additionally, "the road to hell is (often) paved with good intentions," in which good natured people with genuinely good intentions can still cause serious harm because they simply could not grasp or foresee the consequences of their efforts. For example, as Elon Musk and others have warned their contemporaries working on General Artificial Intelligence (AI), although their intentions are generally well-meaning, the outcomes of their work cannot be comfortably predicted, and one reasonably possible outcome of their work is the extinction of the entire human race through the accidental or intentional whims of AI. Such is why collective intelligence, and the simplicity that supports it, is so critical to the wellbeing of us all.

In certain societies we may do well (or not) at using cultural values and moral principles to inform our decision-making by using the terms "beneficial" and "harmful" instead, while erring on the side of more freedom and less restrictions on individual liberty. However, even this approach requires an active use of the skill of discernment, and people (each having their own conscience) will never entirely agree on specifics. I say "skill of discernment" because it truly requires the skillful use of mindfulness, intuition, and critical thinking not distorted by ego-desires or fleeting emotions. The most viable approach in ensuring a group of people can interact harmoniously and with stability (and use technology wisely), with maximum freedom and least harm to one another possible, is to use the simplest, most general set of values and moral principles possible.

With a simple moral code of ethical conduct (incorporating individual rights and responsibilities) agreed to by all participants, it falls on individuals educated to effectively use the skills of discernment to modulate their own personal behavior to, primarily, minimize harm to other life while, secondarily, maximizing their own happiness. And, when a person causes another harm, intentionally or unintentionally, and the parties are unable to make amends and resolve the issue themselves, it would fall on the entire group's (family's, community's, city's, or state's) "collective intelligence" to determine on a case-by-case basis what the most beneficial way would be to handle the transgression. There is no need for complex legal frameworks and dedicated "experts" to make this work, and, in fact, such things are generally a hindrance to the application of collective wisdom. It is more beneficial to all if the collective group alone, not an individual or small group of people, is entrusted with the authority and power to enforce on individuals the group's decision of how to resolve a matter. Wider circles of social structures (e.g. states, cities) would defer decision-making on specific issues or situations to more local social structures (e.g. communities and families), only stepping in when the more local social unit was unable to collectively resolve the matter on their own. Law and order is best maintained, effective, and agreeable to people when its implementation is genuinely democratic and, as importantly, built from the bottom-up, rather top-down in which centralized authorities assume a corrupt control over all levels of society.

Unfortunately, the "old-world" social systems of most industrialized nations, buried under mountains of legal language not even experts can fully grasp, corruption that manipulates this complexity, over-centralized forms of power structures, and toxic methods of enforcement, have become so burdensome, confusing, and counterproductive at maintaining social cohesion and harmony, these systems have been causing for more harm than benefit for their peoples. What is needed is a fundamental reset and shift in our way of thinking, such that all complexity, corruption, and harmful methods of enforcing double-standards are stripped from the systems used to maintain social order. The People collectively yearn to return to simplicity in all areas of public life, in which common sense, compassionate wisdom, logical reasoning, and evidence have genuine influence on how our collective values and principles are applied to specific issues and situations.

With compassion and evidence guiding us, we could use collective intelligence, at all levels, and the skills of discernment at the level of individual conscience to make much wiser decisions about the use of technology and addressing moral transgressions than our current set of representatives, who are generally corrupt, unqualified, sociopathic, or otherwise manipulated by egocentric forces, are capable of. To make this shift happen peacefully will require us all to have the courage to conquer our fears, transcend our petty or egotistical beliefs, let go of ideologies that no longer serve us, and learn to trust again in simplicity and the essential goodness of one another. A peaceful transition will require carefully building up new socioeconomic models of living from within the old, gradually replacing the old ways without directly opposing them. We must learn to let be, in simplicity, what we wish to see, and let go of all complexity. This is a tall order, I know, but history shows us that it can be done – that it must be done.

Transcending the Cultural Entanglements of Death

One lesson regarding life has repeatedly impressed itself upon me lately: the chains of entanglements society deliberately imposes upon us from birth and increasingly ensnares us in throughout our lives are systemic manifestations of "ego" and "death."  These snares of ego-dominated society rob us of our life energy and freedom to live in peace, joy, and harmony.

From birth we are told who we are and what we are supposed to be and do as a person.  We are given a name we did not choose for ourself before we were even born; a government we literally were incapable of consenting to being ruled by prints out a fancy piece of paper and generates a random number locking in and imposing that false ego-identity for the rest of our life; we go through childhood being bombarded by other people's ideas about what we should believe and how we should behave, robbing us of our own identity; public education gives us a sanitized, spoon-fed notion of what the world is like, suffocates our creativity and imagination, denies us the knowledge of how to think critically, and robs us of our conscience; as we go about our lives, our mistakes follow and haunt us because society tracks and labels everything you do, judges you for it, and never allows you to live beyond it once you learn from it and make amends (our mistakes are supposed to guide us, not imprison us); and, as adults, the need for money enslaves us into committing our invaluably precious time to corporate machinations that are destroying the planet and our fellow human beings, robbing us of our life-force and destabilizing our families and communities in the process.

Life and death are a dancing pair of dualities; they do indeed need one another.  Yet, what we see in the delusional abstract layer of conceptualization humanity has imposed on its self is grossly out of balance with the ground layer of physical reality, dangerously favoring egotistical falsehoods and insatiable desires to a degree that threatens the totality of Life on this planet, and continues to cause immense and unnecessary suffering upon billions of souls.  Our collective ego has become completely out of control, behaving like a mental parasite on a global scale.  Whenever a duality is so out of balance, it is inevitably subject to a self-instigated correction that restores balance – this is karma (cause-and-effect within a dynamic system).  In this case, a karmic correction will mean a mass-extinction of the human race.

(Transhumanism and the "technology singularity," which will inevitably lead to humanity becoming a Borg-like hive mind in which individuality is destroyed, are an unattainable mirage due to the systemic failures and societal decay exponentially increasing in parallel with technological advancement.  We do not have the maturity and wisdom as a species to reach this evolutionary threshold without destroying ourselves one way or the other.  Besides do we really want to lose our individuality and the creative power of diversity in the process of collective integration?)

The extreme manifestations of our collective ego, such as global capitalism (built upon a sociopathic ponzi banking scheme writ large), xenophobic nationalism, and ego-driven populist individualism are a "clear and present danger" to the People of the world, and the life-support systems of Earth which we all depend upon to sustain us.  As I have increasingly urged myself, and urge all of you here and now to consider, we must have the courage and determination to dissolve the societally imposed entanglements that currently siphon our individual life-force into systems that are destroying humanity and the Earth.  We must withdraw our consent to be subjects of corrupt socioeconomic systems.  We must let go of all entanglements that no longer serve our best interests.  We must relinquish our attachments to ideas that misguide as from seeing the "truth of what is."  We must redirect our life-force, or precious time, to constructing a new and novel socioeconomic paradigm that is life-affirming and sustainable.

The infinite growth paradigm of our global culture has crashed into the finite limits of our world.  No matter how hard we try, we will only serve to compound the problem (and accelerate our own destruction) if we continue to rely on and feed into the old socioeconomic order.  It cannot be saved; it must be allowed to die conscientiously and in deliberate fashion, or we will all die with it.  Only by collectively walking in balance and wisdom, built on a solid ground of life-sustaining values and systems, can we safely proceed in our technological advancements and noble ego-drive to explore and understand the universe, without destroying ourselves in the process.

On the "Interbeing" of the Universe

I was reading the Heart Sutra with commentary by Thich Nhat Hanh earlier this morning. A theme throughout the sutra and commentary is the understanding of “emptiness” and “interbeing,” that all things are empty of a distinct self-nature and are no other than the composite aggregates of all other things. Form is emptiness and emptiness is form is understood, in one sense, in that the supposed duality of the perceiver and the perceived, in fact, constitute the non-dual whole of “perception.” For example, the eye and the sight constitute the process or experience of “seeing.” In truth, there is no distinction between the seer and the seen, merely an awareness of seeing.
This is why quantum mechanics and Einstein’s physics of Relativity are perfectly compatible with Buddhist metaphysics. In quantum mechanics, it is understood that the perceiver (“observer”) and the thing observed constitute an “entangled,” codependent, co-arising reality. With Einstein’s Relativity, it is understood that space-time is one interwoven fabric in which each observer perceives a different shape to space and rate of the passage of time that is dependent upon their relative position and motion within that fabric. The fabric of space-time is literally interwoven out of the infinite many threads of quantum entanglement that constitute the awareness, “silent witness,” “buddha-nature” that pervades the entire Universe.
Thus, it becomes clear that the entire Universe, space-time itself by definition, IS fundamentally a “dream fabric” of “empty” awareness ("shunyata"). In truly understanding “interbeing” we can not only recognize the compatibility of modern physics with Buddhist metaphysics, but more universally, we can understand nirvana lies in the direct realization that the essence of our true self is “no-self” – we all are One interwoven fabric of Cosmic Consciousness.

On the Existential Threat of Selective Censorship

(A loving reminder and warning I offer out of heartfelt concern and genuine compassion for you all.)

The society we have known thus far is unraveling and failing for many reasons, but let me try to briefly identify one particularly fundamental cause based on the behavior I have noticed people actively engaging in lately: namely, disconnecting from others who challenge us to grow and learn and be invested in one another. People have generally forgotten or were denied the gift of knowing how to truly listen to each other with genuine presence and emotional investment. Many have forgotten how to respect others by giving them their full, open-minded attention and appreciation, denying the dignity and invalidating the existence of the other person. We do this quite commonly while failing to recognize that such treatment is a major source of our own suffering, loneliness, and despair when the tables are turned.

When there is a society-wide culture that promotes a disrespect for and avoidance of different points of view, that society is inevitably doomed, because society is a system and all healthy systems require healthy feedback loops. We all need to be heard and have our concerns acknowledged and our fears validated, or we start to go a little crazy inside because suffering must be transformed for it to not consume and corrupt us. Although transforming our suffering requires personal courage and personal effort, we all need our pain to be acknowledged and validated along the way, and we need others to help guide us through the difficulty. Through truly listening to one another, we can see that all misbehavior stems from ignorance or a place of deep suffering. When we recognize this, we lose our instinct to be fearful and mistrustful of others by default.

The potential destruction of civilized society will, ultimately, be a result of this behavior of willful avoidance generating a huge buildup of anger, resentment, fear, and despair in us all. Why deny others the kind of attention and appreciation you want others to pay you, and that you need in order to be sane and happy? Being truly emotionally invested and involved in the wellbeing of others, as well as in their hopes and doubts, dreams and nightmares, staves off disaster for us all.

– With Love, Respect, & Gratitude for You All

Why I Am a Pacifist

Why I am a Pacifist

(In no particular order.)

“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”
— Chief Seattle

"Return your sword to its place, for all who will take up the sword, will die by the sword."
— Matthew 26:32

"Do to others what you want them to do to you. This is the meaning of the law of Moses and the teaching of the prophets."
— Matthew 7:12

"You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD."
— Leviticus 19:18

"What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: this is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn."
—  Shabbath folio:31a, Babylonian Talmud

"We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if  he saved the life of the whole people."
— Qur’an 5:32

"We shall strive not to cause harm of any kind.
We will live in and be a servant to all that is good..."
— Commands of the Seven Buddhas

"We will be reverential and mindful with all life; We will not kill or be ruled by violence."
— The Ten Precepts [Buddhism (Chobo-Ji Version)]

"There is the case where a certain person, abandoning the taking of life, abstains from the taking of life. He dwells with his rod laid down, his knife laid down, scrupulous, merciful, compassionate for the welfare of all living beings. Abandoning the taking of what is not given, he abstains from taking what is not given. He does not take, in the manner of a thief, things in a village or a wilderness that belong to others and have not been given by them." — the Pāli Canon (Buddhism)

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy, instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
— Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages."
— Thomas A. Edison

Just for the record, I am a pacifist and have absolutely no desire to fight against any system of authority, nor to hurt anyone, ever, for any reason. Other people must live and play out their own karma. I am also done generating negative karma for myself by trying to help people with information who clearly don't want to be helped. (I have removed most of the material I have been posting, out of fear of being "flagged" or eventually targeted as an enemy of the state, even though my desire has never been other than to promote peace, stability, and justice, and 'We the People' upholding the Constitution and principles of the Declaration of Independence. As a soldier and law enforcement officer, I swore a solemn oath to support and defend the U.S. Constitution, against all enemies, foreign and domestic, not realizing I was unknowingly an accomplice to those engaged in an agenda with the "side-effect" of egregiously undermining  the ratified Amendments to the Constitution and the principles of the Declaration of Independence).

On the Nature of Conscious-Awareness

Consciousness is aware of itself by degrees of coherent self-integration, or lack thereof, within local/relative frames of reference ("personal" perspectives). "Awareness" is the non-dualistic concept describing the fundamental "fabric" of spatiotemporal causality relations (i.e. quantum entanglement field, "Universal Spirit", "Source", "Collective Unconscious", etc.), whereas "consciousness" is a dualistic (relativistic) concept describing the degree to which information (energy) is "locally" integrated/entangled (self-perceiving).

Now, tie in the Standing-Wave Theory of Matter, which understands "particles" to be nothing more than the dynamic centers of standing-waves (a simultaneous inward and outward propagation of information/energy waves). As inward flowing information converges at a focal point all component quanta become quantumly entangled with one another (all information quanta are integrated/synchronized/mutually-aware at that relative position in space-time) and pass on through as an outward propagating flow of information. A self-aware being "exists" (from its own point of view) only at the infinitesimally small convergence point of information flow in space-time.

From the perspective of a self-aware "mind" with the conceptual notion of past & future, the "past" is the outward information that has already passed through the focal center of its awareness (the infinitesimal slice of space-time called "now") and the "future" is the inward propagating flow of information that hasn't yet converged at this "center of gravity" of awareness. We hazily remember bits and pieces of the "past" because elements of our present-moment brain are still quantumly entangled with elements of our past-moment brain that had encoded the environmental information processed at the time of perception.  Memory is holographic, because the brain makes deliberate use of quantum entanglement to store and recall past brain-states.  The future cannot be perceived because entanglement with that future information-state "has yet to occur".

One significant issue inherent to the nature of biological quantum memory is that the quantum entanglements forming the memory are with past brain states and not with the actual past environmental objects that were experienced, the memory encoded is of a brain-state of perceptions already skewed in their construction by physical, emotional, and cognitive biases.  Such memory is constructive in that the brain naturally attempts to fill in the missing gaps.  (Hence why witness testimony is 'notoriously unreliable'.)  A second significant issue inherent to biological quantum memory is that it is subject to quantum decoherence simply due to the fluctuating operating environment of the brain's "wetwear".  Whether due to a brain injury, a brain disease, or the simple entropy induced by the passage of time, our biological memories are subject to fading away, becoming "fuzzier," and being 'reconstructed' (modified) as gaps in the memories form.

This overall conceptual framework ties into the concept of an infinite multi-verse in the sense that there are an infinite number of points/positions in space-time in which information converges from an infinite number of directions, and therefore an infinite number of foci of self-awareness exist experiencing a uniquely different version of the "universe". Each foci of awareness can only perceive a particular universe that is self-consistent with itself. Coherent/fully-integrated awareness can only exist at the infinitesimal cross-section of space-time that a particular awareness understands as "here & now". In other words, there are infinite number of 'transpersonal layers' (space-time layers) of consciousness that are self-aware. (All of this agrees remarkably well with Buddhist metaphysics as well.)

We Are Free of We Think We Are Free

We have free will by virtue of the quantum indeterminacy (via "Heisenberg uncertainty principle") that reigns at the molecular scale of the microtubules in our neurons. The microtubules are essentially quantum computers, that are semi-synchronized to process in parallel with one another through an electromagnetic (quantum entanglement) field. That field, which is a web of countless quantum entanglements, is "consciousness" itself. The significance to the free will debate is that quantum nonlocality, tied to this understanding of non-binary quantum processing within individual neurons, affirms that the "consciousness" (the "observer") self-selects a particular version of an unfolding universe out of a sub-infinite number of many possibilities (as limited by external conditions). Ultimately, "particles" are nothing more than the mutually-dependent ("entangled") centers of standing waves in the Higgs Field. Why Compassionate Understanding is the Only Sensible Approach

A human mind is like a seed, from the time of conception. If you plant that seed of consciousness in harsh soil, the seed will either shrivel up and expire, manage to sprout but remain meager and wounded from constant attack from predators, or will manage to grow quite strongly but be riddled with thorns to repel and injure anything that tries to touch it. With a soil ripe with the conditions for fear, such is the outcome for a human mind. But suppose that seed is settled into fertile soil, it will surely grow and blossom despite the occasional deluge of a rain storm. With a soil ripe with the conditions of love, the human mind is invigorated with enough purpose and meaning to grow into something that will benefit other life, like bloomed flowers that benefit bees and other creatures (despite an occasional deluge of pain and difficulty).

What one should recognize is that this is not just a simple analogy. The same fundamental essence (some call "life-force," some call "Mu," some call "spirit," etc.) is behind the growth of a human mind as is behind the growth of a plant. This basic and singular essence of existence is consciousness-waveform-energy. The more coherent that energy-matrix is, the more influence it exercises over how energy flows within its surrounding environment.

So, a human being has significant influence to apply to their environment and, given the intention (choice) to, can provide a flower in their yard with just the right conditions for energy flow (in the forms of sunlight, water, nutrients) that result in it achieving its maximum blossoming potential. Likewise, if a human mind is provided the light of love, the water of freedom, and the nutrients of knowledge and wisdom, they will become the next Einstein, the next Buddha, the next Martin Luther King Jr., the next Gandhi, the next Steve Jobs, or the next Mother Teresa.

This is why it is senseless and unproductive to punish a person's future self for the behavior of the past. Their behavior was overwhelmingly influenced by the conditions that were prevailing at the time of the behavior – proximate causes such as poverty, isolation, neglect, abuse, addiction, mental illness, and miseducation. However, given the necessary social and environmental conditions are then provided that person, they will surely thrive and blossom as the best human being they can be.

Stigma Free

Today, let us face the epidemic of mental illness together, with some clarity.  In countless ways, some subtle, some not so, our society actively engages in the dehumanization of people who do not operate within a “normal” (i.e. socially convenient) range of behavior.  While we’ve increasingly buried our heads in our phones and TV screens over the past couple decades, our country has slowly gone to hell around us — primarily because we have neglected to attend to one another’s suffering and isolation.  Worse than that, we’ve managed to allow the development of a for-profit trade in the mass-incarceration of human beings, a majority of whom have an untreated medical condition (addictions, mental illnesses, and neurological impairments), at the hands of a morally-bankrupt “justice” system that denies all but a few “due process” and “equal protection of the law,” much less genuine avenues for tangible rehabilitative support.

We’ve allowed the justice system to ensnare hundreds of thousands of mentally ill people, whom have not had a genuine capacity to advocate for themselves or press their incompetent public defenders to do a better job.  In an era of the “rocket docket” assembly line of defendants being processed like cattle and public defenders literally only having a few minutes to review each case, we cannot afford to ignore the festering problem of inadequate "behavioral health” care for the tens of millions of people who are one “bad day” away from being trapped within the blackhole of the prison-industrial complex.  Put bluntly, we cannot ignore, any longer, the fact that our jails and prisons have become convenient (money-making) garbage piles for “unproductive citizens.”  Yet, every one of us knows someone actively suffering from a mental malady, someone we care about — whether suffering on the surface, or in silence, they are all around us.  So how do we begin to solve the problem?

We begin by facing reality as a culture, admitting to ourselves that when a person suffers from a serious mental illness or impairment, the impact that that has on their behavior is inherently beyond their ability to self-regulate.  We begin by recognizing people’s behavior is constrained and distorted by environmental conditions (such as poverty, abuse, and neglect) and brain neurobiology (also beyond their control).  We begin by appreciating the fact that we are, as a society, directly responsible for all the social conditions currently prevailing to permit the psychological abuse and neglect of millions of children and vulnerable adults, and directly responsible all the more for the furtherance of those injuries through a cultural stigmatization of the people who suffer the effects of that abuse and neglect.  The onus for change rests with the society, not those abused and abandoned by it.  The lens through which we’ve been perceiving the problem has been the fundamental condition providing for the problem's perpetuation and growth.  Thus, we most readily begin, truly, by dissolving the chains of stigma imposed on ourselves and our bruised and broken brothers and sisters.

In order to effect this, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) started the #StigmaFree campaign to foster greater understanding and compassion in our approach to the largely ignored problem of mental illness and addiction in this country.  I encourage you to take the pledge.  I also strongly encourage you to consider helping support NAMI [www.nami.org], especially since they are actively engaged in such work as the Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) [http://www.nami.org/cit] for law enforcement (emphasizing de-escalation of situations involving a person suffering from a mental health problem).  Direct participation of community members in their local NAMI and CIT programs is sorely needed, but please at least spread the word.

It’s never too late to make a difference, to save future lives through the noble teachings and compassion of today.

How Do Beliefs Close Our Minds?

How adaptable are we really, when operating without the daily support and insight of others to serve as a mirror reflecting back the imperfections that exist in our own way of seeing the world -- without brethren helping us to see the stale frailty of our ingrained biases? The capacity for genuine, lasting behavioral change for a person can only occur within a nurturing social environment. Devoid of a regularity of positive feedback from the environment (that is in excess to the negative), there can be no lasting change or growth of character, for it will sink and drown from exhaustion otherwise.

Our own beliefs can cut us off from being able to recognize the fundamental cracks in our accepted worldview. Beliefs are a self-fulfilling prophecy, for better or worse. Beliefs inform our intentions inform our actions. Beliefs create blind spots within the light of our own consciousness, like shadows cast in broad daylight. Our judgment is limited by our degree of mindful awareness, which is limited by the beliefs thus far attached to. It is only through personal abandonment of fixed attachments and static conceptions about the world, while abiding within a loving web of family and community, that we can restore an inner-equilibrium and equanimity of mind -- a state of consciousness that is the source of all inspiration, wisdom, hope, joy, and righteous agency in the world.
